There was a bang on the door. Stella jerked. The storm rattled the house door in its jamb. Nobody could be at the door at this time of night, she thought, not in this solitary place. The wind thrashed the trees, the telegraph poles, the houses. Not a night to be outside. A thump. A thump. A rhythmic thump thump thump thump. There was someone there.
