It's just before midnight. I'm driving us home from the hospital, the lights of Cape Town's northern suburbs a shimmering blur on both sides of the highway as I speed down it. Soon the lights will fade away and it will become increasingly darker as we travel deeper into the countryside towards Stellenbosch.
